The Birth of the Balm
For many of us, it’s a new baby or a life-changing experience that makes us suddenly aware of the harmful toxins in most skincare products. For me, it was a traumatic brain injury that forced me to seek out cleaner alternatives to the traditional, toxic skincare. That’s when I discovered tallow as a natural moisturizer. While the idea of putting tallow on my face seemed weird at first, I decided to give it a try and purchased my first jar.
Excited to see the results, I opened it only to be hit with the unpleasant smell of beef. Though it worked decently well, I just couldn’t get past the odor. So, I tried another brand, hoping for a better experience. This time, the beef smell was less intense, but the product was yellow and felt too greasy on my skin. I didn’t give up, but my third purchase was no better—this lotion was gritty on top of everything else.
At that point, I’d nearly given up on finding a perfect tallow option. But then, the idea struck: why not make my own? I tried a recipe I found on YouTube, but it came out with the same issues—smelly, gritty, and yellow. That’s when I knew I had to create my own formula to truly solve the problem.
After 15–20 recipe experiments, testing different purification methods, fat types, and temperatures, I finally discovered the perfect formula. It was white, had no beefy odor, and the texture was smooth beyond anything I had tried before. We shared it with others who had used tallow, and the response was overwhelming!
